【review/rate】yasutaka nakata / digital native

released 2018, unborde.

For a long moment in time, Yasutaka Nakata was an idol of mine. He always seemed ahead of the curve with his productions, from the robotic yet organic tunes of Perfume to the cartoonish camp of Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, there was something for everyone when it came to the music he put out.Instead of a capsule album, we got a solo release from the man himself this year, which seems a little out of nowhere considering capsule vocalist Toshiko Koshijima is available for work (or is she?). Honestly, I would have much rather had another capsule album than whatever this was.

A lot of the album’s new offerings are just plain uninspired for me, especially after a whole decade of listening to Nakata’s music. The only songs that stick out are those with features, 『Crazy crazy』, 『NANIMONO』and 『Level up』being my personal favorites and high moments.

Special mention for『Wire frame baby』, while not offering anything super fresh or new, it stands out as a perfectly serviceable pop number in this relatively mediocre set of tracks. One that I greatly appreciated as I was nearing the end of this trial of a listening experience.

Avoid the title track, it’s virtually an ultra bland self cover of early capsule instrumental 『Samurai logic』.

『Give you more』ends the album (thank f*ck for that), but I truly wish we could have gone out on a high note. This track was a pre release single and I hated it then. It kinda just trudges along and tries to be some sort of retro 8bit but also hip and cool (as if to say “I’m Nakata and I can totally keep up with the cool kids!!”) song but it’s just a damn mess.

Frankly, I don’t find this album particularly memorable, and mister Nakata’s gonna need to find a groove before he decides to throw out another album on his own, at least I know he won’t treat Perfume like this, as their latest single’s preview leads me to believe. Here’s hoping the next capsule release isn’t as bland as this was. Individual song ratings are up next!
