released 2018, pme records.
After hearing pretty interesting collaborations with French Montana and Martin Solveig, I decided to give Alma some time. She’s just dropped a mixtape a few days ago and here’s what I have to say.
Opener 『Legend』is relentless with its hook, but it didn’t actually hold my interest past the initial listen. I do really like those low pitched “ay ay”s though.
『Dance for me』and 『Good vibes』are by the numbers pop tracks with a tinge of that tropical house sound that people sure seem to love (admittedly I am not crazy about this trend), but the latter track has a fantastic chorus and its instrumental is triumphant and uplifting in places, giving it an edge in memorability.
The flipside of this mixtape is where it really picks up, with 『Fake gucci』and 『Chit chat』being what I refer to as “MAJOR BOPS”. Look out for Fake’s abrupt middle eight section, an aggressive club section complete with spacey synths and screwed vocals! Chit chat is a more house leaning affair, with a sultry melody and a hook that I can’t get out of my head. I do wish it were longer though.
In betwixt these two future dancefloor staples rests a rather melancholy midtempo by the name of 『Back2u』. I am normally not one for balladry and slower songs unless you can really sell it to me vocally, and Alma does a good job at that. There’s an emotion to her delivery that really elevates the lyrics.
As my first extended foray into Alma’s up and coming discography, I found Heavy Rules to be pretty solid. The first half isn’t as fresh as the latter, but as a whole these tracks all complement each other. I’m excited to see where she goes next. Individual ratings time!
