released 2012, fat possum records.
I happened to come across this record over the weekend, and now that Melody Prochet has announced the long awaited follow-up to this debut solo work, I figured now would be a good time to review it, because i’ve honestly been obsessed with it for the past few days.
『Melody’s Echo Chamber』 blurs the line between alternative rock and trippy psychedelica throughout its length, but offers enough ingenuity to keep the entire experience unique. Prochet’s airy vocals provide the songs a heavenly taste, and her lyrical content is quite engaging. 『I follow you』 and 『Crystallized』 give the album a superb edge in its opening minutes, and 『Some Time Alone, Alone』harkens back to the days of Jefferson Airplane. I haven’t been able to take this track in particular off of repeat much since I first heard it, just fantastic.
『Bisou Magique』is the most hypnotizing cut on the release, its guitars and sultry yet innocent vocals completely entranced me the first time I heard it. Falling in love with a song hasn’t felt this marvelous in a long time. I could rant a little more about this song in particular, but there’s still a whole other half of the album we need to cover.
From here on out, 『Echo Chamber』 starts to go a little all over the place, while it’s not something that takes away from the quality, it did start to feel discombobulated to me. 『Endless shore』 is a bit of a throwaway track, while『Quand vas tu rentrer』 and 『Isthatwhatyousaid』 were a bit too experimental, with the former actually being pretty neat and jazzy, the latter being a bit of a dissonant mess.
Penultimate track 『Snowcapped andes crash』 is absolutely brilliant. The arrangement is ethereal, with Melody’s cherubic vocals pristinely layered over. There’s also an awesome bed of percussion that I found myself tapping along to. It was nice to come back from the experimental section of the LP to something that, while still experimental, maintaned the quality that the early half of the album had. Closer 『Be proud of your kids』 is very interesting, to the point that I still don’t know whether I love it or am genuinely confused by its inclusion since the previous song was such a perfect end to this body of work.
In closing, 『Melody’s Echo Chamber』is a magnificent stroke of musical genius, with a few missteps only because of the pure creative freedom that is evident throughout its tracklist. I’m actually quite happy I didn’t discover this back in the time of its original release, because I can’t imagine how dreadful waiting 6 years for the upcoming sophomore Echo Chamber release would have been. Keep an eye on Melody, she’s one hell of an artist.
