released 2018, simco limited.
The LA based quintet revives interest in the long gone western boy band trend, but with only four tracks on their debut EP, will this hold any water with the ever revolving pop stratosphere?
I’d have to answer with an optimistic yes! While there’s not much in quantity on this release (I think they should have thrown their earlier singles on to fluff the length somewhat until they give us an album, but what do I know?), each song brings something fresh and interesting to the ears, and the vocals are all serviceable.
Intro track “Hello” has lush production, an enticing chorus and all the ingredients necessary for a quality pop bop. Lyrically, the track is nothing all that special, but there’s a cleverly cheeky booty reference (wow, the alliteration in that description!) by member Zion in verse 2 that cracks me up : “When you make that cake look good, make me wanna take a bite, yeah yeah, Put that denim in reverse, back it up into my life”. Points for originality there boys.
“10,000 Hours” and “Healthy” make up the midsection of this EP, and while they’re decent songs, they blend into each other for me a bit. “10,000” is more of an R&B downtempo with a trap beat and lots of ad libbing…. It’s a very 2018 song, if that makes sense. “Healthy” sounds lighter and has a great melody, but I do tend to skip it unless i’m in a mood for it.
Which leads us to the outro cut, “On My Way”. This one is a banger people, with wistful lyrics detailing a lover’s spat and trying to get to the club while having a mental break over the possibility of a girlfriend bumping and grinding on a stranger. It sounds a bit ridiculous on paper, but there’s a nice bit of emotion in the delivery to give this song an edge. If this emotional versatility is due to the members all being sick at the time they recorded this song as mentioned in their video commentary for the song, that’s just hilarious, but i’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt!
“PRETTYMUCH an EP” was definitely too short for me to even consider it an “extended play”, but it sets out to establish PRETTYMUCH as a unit to keep tabs on, which it definitely accomplished for me. Here’s hoping we get an album soon, one that fleshes out the identity of the group and hopefully filled with more pop greatness like Hello and On My Way.
