【mini rate】lova / scripted reality ep

released 2018, universal music AB.

Lova is a swedish vocalist who achieved viral success with two early singles this year, and at the young age of 19, she’s definitely intent on making her mark on pop this year. How was her debut EP? Here are my quick thoughts!

  1. Careful ⭐️⭐️
  2. You me and the silence ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  3. Insecurities ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  4. Sober up ⭐️⭐️⭐️
  5. Scripted reality ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

【thoughts】christina aguilera / accelerate

For being one of pop’s residents of the upper echelon of talent and memorability,  Christina Aguilera (or affectionately referred to as ‘Xtina’) doesn’t actually get all the accolades and acclaim that she deserves in my opinion.  Coupling general underappreciation from the general public with an overall lackluster and forgotten album in 2012 and it’s easy to see why Aguilera has been away from the music scene for some time.

【check!】azealia banks / anna wintour

Quick-witted, blunt, and widely considered “problematic” rapper/singer Azealia Banks returns with “Anna Wintour”, an amalgamation of her signature house sound with pop hooks and killer flows.  I’m going to go ahead and tag this video as NSFW, as it is very heavy on visible nips!  You’ve been warned, but I say if you got em, flaunt em!

Anna Wintour is available on most music outlets!

【check!】róisín murphy / all my dreams

The first in a series of upcoming singles by the creative queen this year, “All my dreams” is another unique entry in Murphy’s fabled discography.  I’m just happy we’re getting new music so soon after 2016’s “Take her up to Monto”.  I never want another 7 year break between albums from this genius again!

【mini rate】beach house / 7

In an effort to not burnout from so many in depth reviews (what a lazy fuck I am, right?), I’ve come up with the ‘mini rate’ : a tighter, more concise alternative to my existing review/rate format. In a mini rate, I will keep individual song thoughts to a minimum (0-2 sentences!) and rely on my 0/5 polyphony star rating system to get the message across.  Without further ado, Beach House’s seventh full length, the aptly named “7” is here.

  1. Dark spring ⭐️⭐️⭐️
  2. Pay no mind ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  3. Lemon glow ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  4. L’inconnue ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  5. Drunk in LA ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  6. Dive ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  7. Black car ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  8. Lose your smile ⭐️⭐️⭐️
  9. Woo ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  10. Girl of the year ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  11. Last ride ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Must-listen : L’inconnue, Drunk in LA, Dive, Girl of the year
(the run from tracks 3-7 is possibly 2018’s greatest moment in music so far.)
Skip : Dark Spring, Lose your smile
(but maybe they’ll be better on my second listen/while stoned)

“7” is available on most major music outlets.

【review/rate】lil / into the lil’

released 2006, delfi sound.

It’s no secret that I’m probably the most prominent fan of the dance-pop group LIL, (originally stylized as Lil’ during their indie days) comprised of the world class songstress Ucio (now known as Yushio) and effortlessly creative producer Tsuge.  Their discography is simply infallible, six albums reaching highs that my freakishly massive music library rarely match.  Over the next few weeks I’ll be reviewing every album LIL put out, as a love letter to my one of my favorite musical groups of all time.   Continue reading “【review/rate】lil / into the lil’”

【thoughts】hex.sys / les fleurs du mal

East coast based witch-pop unit Hex.sys’ latest single “Les fleurs du mal” is a moody slice of something special, an enchanting lullaby wrapped in layers of synth and atmospheric emotion.  Hex.sys do a stellar job at managing to fuse the “often inaccessible to the casual listener” style of darkwave/witch house with catchy pop melodies and structure.

Heads up for an unexpected saxophone in the outro portion, it really adds depth to the sequence and gives an already defined composition additional edge.  Now we’ve got a bit of jazz in our witchy house pop!  Props where they’re due~

You can stream “Les fleurs du mal” on Apple Music and Spotify.
I’ve received word from frontman Zak Cy that Hex.sys will be releasing their “Cntrl.alt.del 2.22” EP later this month, so please look forward to it!
