【thoughts】christina aguilera / accelerate

For being one of pop’s residents of the upper echelon of talent and memorability,  Christina Aguilera (or affectionately referred to as ‘Xtina’) doesn’t actually get all the accolades and acclaim that she deserves in my opinion.  Coupling general underappreciation from the general public with an overall lackluster and forgotten album in 2012 and it’s easy to see why Aguilera has been away from the music scene for some time.

However, times have changed and so has the music.  Christina has launched a promotional campaign for a new album and the first cut is something I initially didn’t understand, but have grown to immensely like and appreciate.  Acceleration is adventurous, fresh and a little camp, these things all work in favor of making a song completely unique and something to talk about.

Featuring 2Chainz and Ty Dolla $ign was probably the only strange choice overall for me, as I don’t particularly feel like they add any depth or texture to the track, especially in the case of Ty’s hilariously strained vocal sections.  However, Acceleration’s freeform arrangement, produced by none other than Kanye West (himself embroiled in a web of controversy currently) is meticulously crafted as the perfect mishmash of catchy top 40 synthpop and culturally current trap.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what else Aguilera has in store for us on her upcoming album “Liberation”.  This could definitely be the album to bring her more widespread success on the level of her previous eras, and I’ll be happy to see that happen!
