released 2018, traumerei
Schwarz Stein’s second mini album (their first since 2011’s “Recurrence of Hallucination”) is more of the same classic electro gothwave that you know and love.
Hardcore and devout Schwarz Stein fans will eat this up, while those expecting something new or innovative won’t find much to be excited about, as this is one of the most phoned in releases of their career. For the record, Hora is a very hit or miss producer, where there is a glimpse of greatness, a shadow of mediocrity is sure to follow.
That all being said, I personally find “Immortal Verses” to be a suitable entry into the Schwarz Stein catalog. No song sounds like complete shit, and Kaya is in top form on vocal duties, his technique and sound only getting stronger and more fine tuned as the years roll by. “Morgue” feels the most like a Hora solo track, with long instrumental passages and an atmospheric, almost dystopian arrangement. “Forest of Paralysis” is almost like the lovechild of previous Schwarz Stein songs “Predict -Rosen Clarion-” from 2011’s “Recurrence” mini album and “Beautiful the Virgin”, from their very first single back in 2002.
Penultimate track “Lotus” is the clear star of this mini for me. It’s classic Schwarz Stein, a hyper aggressive synthpop-meets-screamo fusion that feels like an homage to earlier Schwarz Stein songs (“BIO GENESIS”, “Sleepless Beauty” and Kaya solo track “SODOMY” to be specific). It’s so corny I couldn’t help but love it.
“Immortal Verses” isn’t perfect, and may rely too much on tried and true Schwarz Stein blueprints, but it’s short and sweet enough that you’ll never get too bothered by its flaws.
