【review/rate】tallies / self-titled

released 2019, kanine records.

Released on my 25th birthday, the debut Tallies album is remarkable, a dazzling hint of greatness and things to come from the infant band.

There’s no shortage of immediately memorable tracks, as the record hits you in the face with three back to back cuts (Trouble, Mother, Midnight) that don’t miss a beat. Extra points for frontloading your first album with exemplary indie pop tracks, Tallies! Midnight in particular is one of the album’s highest moments.

“Eden” is a slightly different offering in the middle section, somewhere between romantic midtempo and funky psych-pop.

“Have You” is cute, but I’m writing about it because it felt slightly undercooked and ended a bit too soon. It could have been a bigger moment.

“Trains and Snow” is the dreamiest shoegaze descendant here, its guitars ethereal and fluffy. I love how the song ends with said guitars fading away into a sort of white-noise.

I have to make a point about something, and it’s how the band’s vocalist really gives them a unique edge. Once you hear vocalist Sarah Cogan enter the mix on any one of these songs, it’s a whole new game. Possessing a unique tone and lovely range, she croons and careens through the album with style and grace. I honestly feel like her voice is very unique to this genre, and it lends immense replay value.

The performances are all very well done, with no shortage of funky basslines, jangly, dreamy guitars and technical rhythm/percussion parts. It’s nice to hear such talent right out of the gate.

In closing, the first album from Tallies is one that sets a high bar for indies alt-rock and pop in 2019. It has all of the recipes for success : Memorability, Technicality, Melody and Heart. I’m super glad I found this band and hope to see them go far, because it’ll be hard to top an album this strong so early in the year.
