【review/rate】yackle / frank throw

released 2019, air the room.

Yuuki Yamaguchi makes a splash with his first full length album under his DJ alias “Yackle”. One can’t help but be impressed at the level of technical prowess at work here, especially once you learn that Yackle is only 18 years old!

“Frank Throw” is chock full of features from all over the Japanese music underground, almost serving as a primer into 2019 j-electronic counter culture for the uneducated. From DeDeMouse to MANON and Gomess, this album has quite the illustrious lineup.

It’s also interesting to observe the direction Japanese electronic music has taken over the last few years, it almost seems like the rise of Trekkie Trax has made way for Yackle’s unique brand of jersey club and future bass to be mainstream. The days of 128BPM dance music seem like they’re almost out of vogue at this point.

Cuts like “Super Lawful Conspiracy” and “Coconuts” really drive this point home. They’re major bass driven bops with noisy and twinkly synths sprinkled on top that latch onto your ears and don’t let go. (I had coconuts on repeat for about 15 minutes last night, and I’m not ashamed.)

The midsection of the album is mostly rap features, and while they’re all good (if not a bit muddled), I didn’t find myself gravitating toward them as much as the opening section. That being said, “Supper! Supper! Supper!” and “Running Away” are definite highlights.

“Frank Throw” clocks in just shy of 40 minutes, and while it’s a very entertaining listen, if not just for the sheer amount of production wizardry at play, some may not find a lot to love here. If you’re into the works of Lil Texas, In the Blue Shirt, SOPHIE and Flume however, this album is right up your alley. Find yourself not feeling the vocal/rap features? Yackle was nice enough to release an instrumental version of the album as a sister disc as well! I’d rate that a hard 10/10.
