released 2019, interscope.
“Dedicated” is as much of a declaration of independence as it is a bold and adventurous example of what pop music should be as we begin to leave the aughts behind and move forward into a new decade. Carly Rae Jepsen’s songwriting has matured, but her music remains youthful and funky fresh. Flirting with influences from the last 4 decades (shades of Mariah Carey, The Jackson 5 and even the Bee Gees are on display here), “Dedicated” manages to worm its way through a menagerie of styles, while never feeling like it’s gone too far off the path.
There’s no shortage of thrills on the record, and the production is sublime. The glitchy futurity of “Now That I Found You” may appeal to more modern sensibilities, while the retro disco and new wave flair of “Julien”, “Happy Not Knowing” and “Want You In My Room” will definitely make their ways onto the playlists of those addicted to the sounds of yesteryear. “Dedicated” is an album that will be talked about among the twitter and pop music masses for years to come, just like its predecessor (E•MO•TION anybody?).
Honestly though? Carly has earned her seat at the table with all of the pop icons with this one. Hell, she earned it with “Call Me Maybe” and “Run Away With Me”, but we were just waiting for her career to have some longevity.
